Intro

Wildly romantic path to Sapünerbach and down to Plessur under the Langwies viaduct; once the most expansive railway bridge in the world. The mudslide of 1980 destroyed Molinis. Schanfigg offers extensive views – including tower view of the Jakobus church in Tschiertschen.

Description

The pretty Graubünden mountain village of Langwies lies at the eastern end of the Schanfigg and is a neighbouring community of the well-known tourist resort of Arosa. Passing sun-baked Walser houses, you leave the village behind and hike down to the Sapüner Bach stream, which later flows into the Plessur.

The route leads over the Sapüner Bach stream, along the Plessur for a while and under the Langwieser Viaduct. The impressive reinforced concrete structure carries the Rhaetian Railway over a deep gorge. With 287 metres in length, it caused a worldwide sensation when it opened in 1914.

Through the Enthalb forest on beautiful paths and later up a gravel road, you reach Mattelti. From there, the trail leads downhill again, almost as far as Molinis on the banks of the Plessur. The famous earth pyramids are about to become visible on the northern slope. They are natural works of art made of eroded rock saved from complete erosion by overlying blocks. Their appearance constantly changes as old pyramids collapse and new ones form.

After the short ascent, a beautiful forest path leads along the slope. A wooden footbridge takes you over the Gross Bach stream. In some places, the trail on the steep slope is secured with wooden footbridges and railings. A well-trodden path leads through alpine pastures and flower meadows, where you come across a few scattered wooden huts.

On an asphalt road, you reach Tschiertschen, which sits on a high plateau. The settlement was originally Rhaeto-Romanic but later settled by Walsers. Amidst the dark wooden houses, the tower of Tschiertschen's Jakobus Church is clearly visible. From here, the view stretches far over the Schanfigg valley.
