Jakobsweg Graubünden
Overview
Intro
A view over Chur from the Rosenhügel. Through a cutting, over fields and meadows, to Domat/Ems - built around 7 hills. And along the Senda Sursilvana river to Tamins, where the Vorder and Hinterrhein meet. A visit to Rhäzüns and the famous Kirche Son Gieri with Jakobus display is well recommended.
Description
Chur, which is considered the oldest city in Switzerland, is impressive with a charming old town, historic buildings, winding streets, beautiful squares and magnificent churches.
The way out of the city leads along the motorway. Below the Rosenhügel hill, we continue into the forest, where you can always catch attractive views of the city. The landscape changes at Kalkofen, where fields and meadows dominate the picture up to Domat/Ems. After crossing the tracks of the Rhaetian Railway, the path passes two hills, Tuma Tschelli and Tuma Casti. Domat/Ems is known for its twelve landscape-defining hills with rock cores made of broken Bergstutz limestone, which are known as tumas. These hills were most likely created by the Flims and Tamins landslides.
After Domat/Ems, you soon come to the island of Barnaus with its Rhine power plant. The 73-metre-wide weir system dams the Rhine over a length of three kilometres. The two turbines supply around 20,000 households with electricity.
After crossing the Rhine, you are on a surfaced road for a short time and then continue the hike on a path. From this point, the stage shares the path with the Senda Sursilvana, which leads from Andermatt to Chur.
A short time later you reach Tamins, where the Vorderrhein and Hinterrhein flow together in the Reichenau district. Reichenau plays an important role in the history of Grisons. Two bridges and a customs house were built here in the 14th century. The two bridges form the only river crossings on the north-south axis and were therefore of great importance for long-distance traffic. The village was completely destroyed by the French in 1799. Only the church, which stood on an elevated site, survived the fire.
