Arrival of the wine barrel from Le Landeron and a wide variety of culinary offerings on the Aarequai near the Landhaus.
After its journey by boat from Biel/Bienne to Solothurn along the Aare, a wine barrel from the Domaine de Soleure in Le Landeron arrives on a traditional pontoon at the Aare pier near the Landhaus, in front of the youth hostel. Once the barrel has been unloaded from the pontoon, the wine can be tasted straight from the barrel—as long as there’s any left.
The Aare boats, which were once loaded with wine barrels for Solothurn at the Jura lakes, were “chargés pour Soleure.” The crews of these ships were allowed to taste the wine they were carrying as a supplement to their meager wages. To this day, the expression “être chargé pour Soleure” or simply “être sur Soleure” is used jokingly when someone has had a bit too much to drink.
For centuries, winemakers on Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Biel have supplied the people of Solothurn with wine. The Domaine de Soleure in Le Landeron, the vineyard owned by the civic community of the city of Solothurn, was founded as early as the late Middle Ages. During the Baroque period, the estate primarily supplied the Solothurn hospital.
After tasting wine straight from the barrel, you can join many guests dressed in Baroque attire to enjoy the impressive atmosphere at the “Aaremürli,” where local restaurants and bars invite you to round off the evening in style with a rich and varied selection of dishes and drinks.
