On the occasion of his first institutional solo exhibition in Geneva, Hunter Longe draws on the presence of the Rhône River, which flows through Halle Nord, to continue his exploration of temporalities that extend far beyond human history. For several years, the artist has been juxtaposing his own experience of time with durations that transcend it: those of minerals and, more broadly, geological processes. By creating friction between scales that are usually irreconcilable—a few decades versus hundreds of millions of years—he constructs syncretic constellations where micro- and macro-temporalities converge, not to relativize human experience, but to shift its coordinates. The exhibition thus brings together various tools for understanding reality, whose validation frameworks differ but to which the artist assigns the same operational value.
In Halle Nord, a collection of sculptures—whether crafted, found, or gradually altered by erosion processes involving both human and material agents—forms an environment where nothing appears definitively stabilized. Through a series of interventions that unfold both inside and outside the exhibition space, the artist seeks to produce a form of “temporal shift”: an experience in which the perception of time is disrupted and materials seem to follow their own temporal trajectory before the visitors’ eyes. The exhibition also reflects the artist’s ongoing commitment to collaborative and polyphonic forms of creation. It features a sound composition created in collaboration with Janiv Oron, whose practice explores the material dimensions of sound, as well as poems by the American writer, poet, and American professor CAConrad, whose writing—nourished by rituals—extends the exhibition’s exploration toward alternative, almost magical modes of perception.
Interested in the notion of offering, the artist considers the act of taking, moving, or placing an object as a way of intervening, on a human scale, in temporalities that transcend it. The found objects are thus received as offerings from ancient times, while the artist’s gestures in turn become reciprocal offerings, re-inscribing them in the world along a trajectory with renewed potential.
