Intro

This unique moated castle is located on the northern edge of the village of Utzenstorf in the Swiss Plateau and is surrounded by a vast English-style garden. It dates back to the 17th century and was once the seat of the Bernese bailiwick.

The historical rooms with their ornate furnishings, paintings with hunting motifs and hunting trophies bear witness to the grand Bernese style of living from the 17th to the 19th century.

In the castle building and adjacent granaries, the Swiss Museum of Wildlife and Hunting houses a collection of historical hunting weapons and tools that is unique in Europe, as well as an outstanding presentation on the evolution of the hunting horn. Other sections are devoted to hunting dogs, falconry, the history of hunting in Switzerland and wild animals in the modern cultivated landscape. Special exhibitions held each year focus on selected hunting, ecological or wildlife-related topics that highlight the interplay of hunting and nature.
