Unusual cable cars and mountain railways

Be it the steepest funicular railway in the world, the highest external lift in Europe or a technical engineering marvel – you will never forget travelling on these spectacular railways.

TITLIS Rotair – the world’s first revolving cable car.

During the five-minute trip, the TITLIS Rotair cable car rotates 360 degrees, giving passengers a perfect panoramic view of steep rock faces, deep crevasses and snow-covered mountain peaks.

Stoosbahn – the steepest funicular railway in the world

During a short journey of just over three minutes, the Stoosbahn holds a world record with a gradient of 110%. This is the steepest funicular railway in the world.

Gelmerbahn – Europe’s steepest open-top funicular railway

Thrill seekers will find their buzz in the Haslital, on the Bernese side of the Grimsel Pass. Here, the open-carriage funicular railway ascends a gradient of up to 106%.

Hammetschwand Lift – Europe’s highest outdoor lift

The lift is in the rock face at 1,132m and takes passengers up from the valley station in under one minute. During the summer months, the lift shaft is illuminated at night and clearly visible from Lucerne.

Selun cable car – open cable cars

Selun cable car was built in 1911 as a simple way of transporting objects up the mountain. It was completely renovated in 1986 and approved to carry passengers. Nowadays, it transports passengers in unique open wooden cable cars.

Crystal Ride – sparkling cable cars

The tri-cable railway takes day trippers to the top of the Klein Matterhorn, to Europe’s highest mountain railway station. Four of the cable cars sparkle in a spectacular way. Adorned with Swarovski® crystals, they feature a glass floor, offering passengers a crystal-clear view of the vast depths below.

Giessbach funicular railway holds a certain nostalgic charm

Despite benefitting from technical updates, the Giessbach funicular railway still conveys a nostalgic charm. The railway chugs from the Giessbach-See landing stage through the forest, over bridges and along waterfalls to Grandhotel Giessbach.

Fribourg’s funicular railway – a technical engineering marvel

The nostalgic funicular railway has been ferrying passengers down to the town of Fribourg on the River Saane since 1899. The last water-powered funicular railway in Switzerland is not powered by an engine but runs on wastewater from the upper town. This is why it has been listed in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National and Regional Significance.

The nostalgic railway takes passengers up to the heavens in a 24-seat wooden carriage, which has been restored to its former glory. At the upper station, visitors can enjoy a wonderful view of Reichenbach Falls, where Sherlock Holmes fell to his doom in a battle against his arch-enemy.

Rasa Bähnli – cable car

The cable car glides up to Rasa from the valley station in Verdasio, Centovalli. This small, vehicle-free spot would struggle to survive without it.

Mettlen-Rugisbalm railway – a former farmer’s cable car in Engelberg

Although the railway runs throughout the year, it doesn’t have a fixed timetable. Anyone who wants to travel up to Rugisbalm must use the telephone on the wall at the station below to call the Töngi family. A member of the family will then provide all the necessary information about how to make the ascent.

Samnaun Twinliner – the world’s first double-decker cable car

The Twinliner went into operation in 1995 and was the only double-decker cable car in the world at the time. The aerial cableway takes approximately six minutes to make a total ascent of 722m. One cabin can hold up to 180 people, meaning it can transport around 1,620 people every hour.
