Birthplace of Dadaism. Cabaret Voltaire.

Spiegelgasse 1 in Niederdorf: where Dadaism began in 1916.

While the First World War was raging in Europe, painters, musicians, dancers and writers sought refuge at the Cabaret Voltaire. They proclaimed the Dada movement to be a “protest against a world gone mad” and questioned everything about existing concepts of art. An international revolution in art began here.

Dada is timeless, provocative and inspiring at the same time.

100 years later.

The Cabaret Voltaire is still a centre for the modern-day Dada movement today. And an important place for Rea Eggli: The cultural entrepreneur is involved in the supporting association of the Cabaret Voltaire, and in 2016 she was responsible for communications on the 100th anniversary of Dada. For Rea Eggli, the Dada of today hasn’t lost any of its relevance or its humour.

Dada always makes me smile and gets me thinking.

1,300 works of art.

As an entrepreneur, Rea Eggli spends a lot of her time travelling around the city. And she loves the countless artworks which enhance the urban landscape. In Zurich, there are around 1,300 works of art in public places waiting to be discovered. They are often in prominent places as sights in their own right, though a lot of the time you need to know where to find them.

Art from around the world. Rietberg Museum.

Recipe against wanderlust.

One of Rea Eggli’s favourite places for art in Zurich is the Rietberg Museum, with arguably the most beautiful park in the city. Rea Eggli lived in Asia for two years, so often visits the Rietberg Museum whenever she’s missing it.

Countless artefacts.

The Rietberg Museum Zurich is the only art museum in Switzerland dedicated to non-European cultures. It hosts an internationally-renowned collection of works from Asia, Africa, America and Oceania. Rea Eggli is particularly impressed by the viewable storage area in the basement. She can spend hours in wonder there. And she never ceases to be amazed how many artefacts are on display.

What I would love most is to be locked in for a night and count all the artefacts.
