Wine hike: Viticulture and area (approx. 6 hours)
The longest of the three wine walks is dedicated to Merlot. The approximately 20-kilometre-long circular route leads from the Laveggio plain to the slopes of Monte San Giorgio and conveys how geology and climate shape viticulture in Mendrisiotto. On the way, the path passes Tremona, briefly crosses the Italian border at Clivio and opens up numerous villages of western Mendrisiotto. Information boards explain the natural conditions of this traditional wine region.
- Good to know: Thanks to the dense network of hiking trails, the route can easily be divided into several stages.
- Tip: In Tremona, several wineries invite you to tastings; advance registration is recommended.
Vineyard Circular Trail: Man and grapevine (approx. 4 hours)
Start in Mendrisio at the San Giovanni district and follow the yellow hiking signs through the wine landscape of Mendrisiotto. The circular route leads via Salorino and Obino to Castel San Pietro, one of the most important wine-growing communities in Ticino and on to the Mezzana Agricultural Institute. Along the route, information boards convey the millennia-old relationship between man and grapevine – from mythological origins to today's wine culture.
- Good to know: The circular route starts and ends in Mendrisio and is also suitable for families.
- Tip: In Castel San Pietro, beautiful views open up over the vineyards and the hilly landscape of southern Ticino.
Wine hike: The viticultural techniques (approx. 4 hours)
The circular trail starts in the hamlet of Seseglio at the foot of the Penz hill and leads through vineyards and forests to the southernmost point of Switzerland – an atmospheric border area near Laghetto. Along the route, information boards explain the traditional viticultural techniques of the Mendrisiotto. Via Pedrinate and the little church of S. Stefano al Colle, the path leads back to Seseglio and offers beautiful views of Monte Generoso and the Valle di Muggio along the way.
- Good to know: Seseglio is located near Chiasso and is easily accessible by public transport.
- Tip: Sturdy shoes are worthwhile, as the route runs over longer sections on nature paths and paths.
