The Wind's Bride
During a trip to Naples in April 1913, Oskar Kokoschka and his mistress Alma Mahler experienced a violent storm. This event may have given the artist inspiration for the visual idea of the "Bride of the Wind", a dual likeness of himself and his mistress in which the couple are borne through a storm on a strange cloud. The "Bride of the Wind" is an iconic work of expressionist art because it is an exceptionally powerful and successful example of the visualisation of emotional states.
