Description
Trun, a delightful village set in the Surselva area on the Vorderrhein, not only preserves the Romansh language, but also its historical buildings. This includes the Cuort Ligia Grischa Museum, Court of the Grey League, which was built in 1679. At that time, it served as the town hall of the Grey League.
The hike begins on a road towards Campliun, runs through pastures to Rabius and later to Sumvitg, a village with an impressive parish church. In the village centre, the beautifully decorated town houses Casa Maissen and Casa Schmidt also provide a superb townscape. The route continues to Sumvitg railway station and Cumpadials before heading out of civilisation and into nature.
Through the forest and along the course of the Rhine, this stage reaches Madernal, a section with a densely overgrown meadow landscape, stone-strewn paths and creaking wooden footbridges. Following the river bank, you pass the small town of Disla and shortly afterwards arrive in Disentis.
The name Disentis comes from the Latin word desertina and denotes an uncultivated, sparsely populated area. Set in the alpine landscape of the upper Surselva on the Vorderrhein, the village is located at an altitude of 1,130 metres. The landmark of Disentis is the Benedictine monastery with the dual-towered church, which was founded in around 720 AD.
