From Yverdon through the Plaine de l’Orbe. Roman mosaics on the slopes, the Romanesque abbey church in Romainmôtier is serene. Your calf muscles are on fire but lovely deciduous forests soothe your soul.
Description
Place Pestalozzi, with the town church, is the bustling heart of Yverdon. The town’s street cafés are the perfect place to stop and linger for a while. Here you can see for yourself a large bronze statue of teacher Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi doing what he loved. Next you will make your way out of the beautiful spa town across the river Thielle. Follow the Mujon stream for a while through the Plaine de l'Orbe. This area is hot and dry. Maize and sunflowers have made themselves scarce, making the tender lettuce leaves nurtured with water stand out even more.
Champvent Castle, one of the many marvellous castles in French-speaking Switzerland, is a permanent fixture on the landscape. Make sure to stop and see the mosaics of the Roman villa in Orbe, known to the Romans as Urba. After you pass Agiez, several stretches of woodland will follow. The church and fountain of Bretonnières make a picturesque sight. The plain of the river Orbe seems to transition seamlessly into the Parc Jura Vaudois. Then comes stunning Romainmôtier: make sure to ride into this enchanting village and pay a visit to one of the oldest and most important sacred buildings in Switzerland. The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul is around 1,500 years old.
Things get a little faster-paced through the “Bois Collard” and “Bois de Moiry” forests as you enter the Moiry (to which the Bois de Moiry owes its name), flanked by oak, pine and beech trees along the way. At the outskirts of L’Isle, the river Venoge springs from six sources, flowing into Lake Geneva 38 kilometres downstream. The futuristic white building here is home to the Fondation Michalski of Montricher, a foundation for writing and literature. Just as writing is often regarded as a solitary activity, the landscape from the ledge overlooking Lake Geneva also appears to grow ever more isolated. But this only makes for a more striking panorama.
This leg is leisurely riding – apart from the substantial climb in altitude – and impressive too, taking you from one village to the next. Some pubs and restaurants along the way have closed down, potentially for good. But didn’t they say that about printed books too? Berolle makes a valiant effort to oppose this: there is a little library here right by the village fountain. Last but least, ride in a long straight line all the way through the Jura park to Bière, where you can enjoy a well-earned “bière” of a different kind.
