Brissago lies on Lake Maggiore in Ticino, on the border with Italy, at the lowest point in Switzerland. Cypresses, palm trees and lemon trees shape the village and give it a Mediterranean flair.

Discover Brissago

Narrow lanes lead you from the village centre down to the lake. At its heart stands the Renaissance church of San Pietro e Paolo. It is surrounded by centuries-old cypresses. In the gardens of the old town, you will find lemon and orange trees. On the lakeshore, you can see the historic factory building of the tobacco manufacturer. 

The Brissago Islands

A boat takes you to the Brissago Islands in just a few minutes. Isola Grande is the larger of the two islands. It is home to the botanical island garden with over 2,000 plant species from around the world, from camellias from Japan to eucalyptus from Australia. The mild climate by the lake allows vegetation to thrive here that you would otherwise find only far south of the Alps. A walk takes you from one climate zone to the next.

Cigars from Brissago

The cigar factory is one of the village’s landmarks. Cigars are still made here by hand today. Their slightly curved shape and spicy aroma made the Brissago one of the best-known Virginia cigars. At its peak in the early 20th century, up to 700 people worked there, rolling millions of cigars each year.

Around Brissago

Above the village lies the Sacro Monte with the Baroque pilgrimage church of Santa Maria Addolorata. By boat, you can easily reach Ascona and Locarno, where old-town lanes and lakeside promenades await. From Locarno, the Centovalli Railway runs through one of Ticino’s most beautiful valleys to Domodossola in Italy. From Brissago, you can hike into the hills and enjoy views of Lake Maggiore.
