This is the Rhône Glacier
The Rhône Glacier can be found in the south of the Swiss Alps, by the Furka Pass in
Valais. The mighty river of ice is the best researched glacier in Switzerland, as well as the easiest to reach.
Discover the Rhône Glacier
The best time to experience the Rhône Glacier is between June and October. Set off from Gletsch, where the glacier reached as far as the Grandhotel Glacier du Rhône 200 years ago. On the
natural educational trail, you can learn more about how the ice giant developed. From Gletsch, follow the winding road towards the
Furka Pass. You’ll see it right in front of you, opposite the iconic Hotel Belvédère: the imposing, approximately eight-kilometre-long Rhône Glacier. This is also the source of the
River Rhône, which flows into the Mediterranean Sea near Marseille.
Rhône Glacier ice grotto
The highlight of your glacier adventure will be a visit to the ice grotto. A wooden walkway will lead you inside the Rhône Glacier for around half an hour, where you cannot help but marvel at the ice formations in magical shades of blue. Since the glacier is always in motion, the ice grotto has to be drilled anew each year. Tip: Make sure to wear sturdy shoes and warm clothing.
Glacier trail to the Rhône Glacier
Get to know the Rhône Glacier better and observe its decline with your very own eyes. Glacier experts estimate that the glacier will have disappeared by the end of this century. The tour, which takes approximately one hour, takes you from
Furkastrasse to the newly formed glacier lake. At the glacier’s tip, blankets are used to protect the ice from solar radiation. You can find out interesting facts about glaciers, the climate and water on the 12 information boards along the way.
Around the Rhône Glacier
The ride on the
steam train over the Furka Pass is one of a kind. Not far from the Rhône Glacier lie the
Grimsel mountains with their impressive artificial lakes. From the Berghaus Oberaar, a hike to the
Oberaar glacier is well worthwhile. Or visit Handegg, where the
Europe’s steepest funicular will take you to the idyllic Gelmersee lake.
Experience the area around the Rhône Glacier for less
The Obergoms Region around the Rhône Glacier is perfect for hiking – it costs little and offers unique experiences. Lace up your hiking boots, fill your backpack up in preparation for a picnic and enjoy the fresh mountain air. Such as on the Furka Pass–Tällistock circular hike, for example.
