Weisstannen valley
Hint
Intro
Going to the Weisstannen Valley just off Mels on Lake Walen enters another world. The steep, narrow mountain road snakes through tall pine trees up into the high valley, where there are two hamlets, Schwendi and Weisstannen, with a population of about 300 people and plenty of hiking options.
Weisstannen valley at a glance
As remote as this place may seem, it has quite a history with finds dating back to the Bronze Age. The first people to live here in modern times were the Rhaetoromansh, followed by the migrating Walser. The valley also has some wonderful myths which can be explored here on a visit. The valley has been trying its hand at ecotourism. To this end, there is an herbal garden, and the Bachüsli where one can bake delicious bread in a wood-burning oven, which complements the fine cheese that is made locally.
How to get there: Drive or take public transportation to Mels via either Flums or Sargans (Swiss Post Bus)
