Picture postcard Switzerland: cheese, chalets, snowy summits, cable cars, hotel aromas and scissor cuts. Away from the idyllic image, the Pays d'Enhaut and Saanenland, an impressive landscape enlivened by a VIP aura and canny mountain folk.

Mysteries beneath the surface: ride the banks and shores, valleys and hills of the Thurgau by bicycle and discover what is hidden beneath the gentle surface of the pre-alpine region between Rorschach and Schaffhausen.

Fleeting glimpses of the secret life of the old Aare, the proud wooden bridge at Büren, the atmospherically emerging silhouette of the St. Ursen Tower in Solothurn. The route swerves southwards to the Grosse Emme, where Bernese farmhouses appear, soon followed by the sandstone cliffs of Burgdorf.

From the Limmattal valley at the heart of primeval Switzerland: From the village town of Dietikon in the tranquil Reppischtal valley, along the forested slopes of the Albis chain. Past the Zugersee and Lauerzersee lakes towards the mountains, left the Rigi, right the Mythen, and on to Schwyz.

The main valley in the Valais widens, sun warms the dry mountain slopes. Between Leuk and Sierre an unruly part of the Rhone, and the Pfynwald, a nature reserve on a huge mound of glacier detritus; a motorway will be built here by 2020.

Entlebuch, biosphere reserve, mysterious forests and grassland. Fortune seekers still pan for gold in the waters of the klein Emme and Fontanne. Past Werthenstein Monastery through the Littau alluvial landscape to Luzern.

This itinerary lets cyclists discover the region’s typical sceneries: the lake, the vineyards, the countryside and the Jura foothills.

The route makes a sweeping arc through a variety of landscapes in seven cantons, always accompanied by bodies of water, from the wild Gorges de l’Areuse, through the Emme’s riverside woodland to the twists and turns of the Sihl.

The Rhone Route runs through the magnificent mountain scenery of the Valais on charming, quiet paths along the Rhone. It leads along the famous palm-lined promenades of Lac Léman and the picturesque Lavaux vineyards and ends at cosmopolitan Genève.

The remote high-valley of La Brévine, wind-blown and bleak even in summer. Then the cave-world of Col-des-Roches: the mills were once served by underground water courses. In Le Locle, the main street is lined by well-known watch companies.

The thundering natural spectacle of the Rhine Falls is followed by space, then the Thur and flower-adorned, timber-framed houses at Andelfingen, a city district with a village character leads to Winterthur. A few twists of the Töss and the Zürich Oberland begins.

Figs and kiwis ripen in the Walensee climate chamber where the sheer high cliffs of the Churfirsten threaten to topple into the 150-metre-deep waters. An easy pedal to Sargan, guarded by castle and Gonzen, old supplier of iron ore.

A changing landscape, after the high plateau now hills and isolated valleys. From Moutier the route winds alongside the railway up to Gänsbrunnen, the language changes. Destination is Welschenrohr, once a wealthy watchmaker village behind the Weissenstein.

As silent as the beat of an eagle’s wing, the bewitching natural world of the Engiadina Bassa, a tiny refuge for endangered species. In contrast, ornately painted houses on sunny terraces and mineral springs around Scuol-Tarasp.

From the Goldau rockfall area at Zugersee lake, under the spell of the Rigi, alongside the meandering Reuss, through historic bridge towns such as Bremgarten and Brugg. Klettgau wine villages follow the Zurzach spa, the goal is the thundering Rhine Falls.

This cross-border route takes you through the diverse Reiat, past Hemishofen and back to the Munot town, Schaffhausen. The focus of this route is one of Europe's most scenic countrysides along the Rhine.

Magnificent castles at Lenzburg and Wildegg. Through the Aare Valley, land of riverside woodlands, over the Bözberg with Roman cart tracks (at Effingen), down to Frick with Europe’s oldest dinosaur. Soon reaching Stein and the Rhine.

From Bex, where salt is still mined, up to the old mountain village of Gryon and the high-altitude health resort of Villars-sur-Ollon, over the two passes, Col de la Croix and Col du Pillon. Along the Saane to jet-set resort Gstaad. Saanen is more peaceful.

Ride from the historic capital city through the Wangen Valley full of industry and commerce, then head straight for the Sense and follow the river to Laupen with its magnificent castle. Pass by fields and woodlands across the Biberen plateau towards Kerzers.

Pastureland and cultivated fields stretch over wide rolling hills, sheltered hollows hide villages and hamlets, solid stone houses proudly display Burgundian archways; the peaceful Gros-de-Vaud is the granary of western Switzerland.

The tour links two countries on the Rhine: Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. Five castles with a common history line the route. In addition to the ancient buildings, towns such as Buchs and Vaduz are well worth a visit.

The wide Reuss floodplain is a peaceful natural paradise. Then the hilly Säuliamt, once off the larger trading routes, the rural idyll is soon penetrated by a motorway. Neat urban districts announce the presence of the city.

The green fairy (absinth) floats through the Val de Travers, the Areuse pushes spectacularly through a gorge, the view to the lake opens, Neuchâtel: above the thousand-year-old castle, below the lively old town and at the harbour a touch of the Mediterranean.

Through Piano di Magadino, the Ticino’s vegetable garden, then amidst European camping guests on the lovely lakeside promenade to Locarno, a happy mix of the German holiday dream, Ticino business people and Swiss German Italianità.

This 57km loop includes two passes and starts in Martigny, a town with a Roman past located in the French-speaking part of Canton Valais where the Rhone makes a right-angle.

The Thur swings to the west, burrows into sandstone cliffs, the atmosphere becomes strangely haunting. Toggenburg is a hilly and compact landscape, hay farming with scattered farmsteads.

From the industrial Ergolz valley first south and then east towards the skyline of Basel. Along the Bris through densely populated areas to Aesch and the calmer Leymen valley with its stretches of peaceful plains.

The lake of Pfäffikon is a recreation area for all those who love nature. The lake with its reed belt is of national significance. The highlights of this bike tour are the Roman castle, the Robenhauser moor, and the Juckerhof farm in Seegräben.

Lac de Neuchâtel: chirping in the reeds, waves lapping at the gentle shore, the Jura shimmering in the distance. Over 100 species of birds breed in the Grande Cariçaie, the 40-km-long marsh and reed belt along the southern shores of the lake.

This marked itinerary crosses the beautiful Broye valley and leads along its lakes. Visitors will discover historical sites such as Payerne and its Romanesque abbey church, Avenches and its Roman vestiges, not to mention the medieval town Estavayer-le-Lac.
