Idyllic Tössegg at the bend in the Rhine, first a rural interlude then initial signs of industrialization, proud machine and locomotive builders in Winterthur and rows of lovingly converted workers’ cottages.

An easy ride through the wide, flat Gürbe Valley. Passing by the airport, the route runs straight through Bern's Old Town. It leads from the industrial Wangen Valley to the Sense, then follows the river to Laupen with its veranda houses before reaching Golaten via the Biberen plateau.

From the thundering Rhine Falls to timber-framed houses in Andelfingen, from lively Winterthur through narrow valleys and hilly countryside to the shallow Pfäffikersee, through a unique glacial landscape and then scenic ascents to the historic Rikenpass.

The Sanetsch is the finest pass you have never heard of! At 26km in length and with a difference in altitude of 1690m, the pass road starts in Sion and could be compared to the famous Stelvio, but with less traffic.

With three legendary passes that regularly feature in the Tour de Suisse, this loop ranks among the great alpine classics. Although just 106km in length, it should not be underestimated: with almost 40km of climbing, it presents a major challenge.

The treasures of the hill town of Romont beckon, the pastures becomes flatter, the views more impressive, the sweeping, contoured countryside challenges your legs, castles wave from rocky ridges and finally the tiny orange train rumbles along to Châtel-St-Denis.

Through the sheer rock walls of the Gorges de Pichoux, passing the former Bellelay Monastery, you reach the Freiberge region at 1000m altitude, its rugged beauty laced with lush green pastures, firs and moors.

The multi-faceted Thur is your constant route companion, leading from where it flows into the Rhine, over the dams in Thurgau, through rugged Toggenburg woodland and up to its headwater near the Alpstein massif.

In earlier days, impressive estates were built on the Pfannenstiel, today expensive villas line the shores of the Zürichsee, where protected private and public property taunt each other, until Zurich’s stylish leisure & pleasure seekers take over the scene.

The Herzroute (Heart Route) leads through the most beautiful areas in Switzerland's Alpine foothills. The secluded trails, far from traffic noise and all hustle and bustle, are particularly appealing for exploring by electric bike. The route offers heart-warming encounters with the countryside and people.

The 55-kilometer stretch from Wattwil to Herisau introduces you to a few lesser-known towns than Toggenburg, and permits a glimpse of the Säntis too.

Picture-postcard beauty of the blue Lago di Lugano, for thousands a fervent holiday dream, Morcote for photos. The Mendrisiotto, the richest vineyard region of Ticino with its enogastronomic offers, is located in the most southern part of Switzerland.

This moderately challenging loop starts at Saanen, a typical Bernese Oberland village, which is easy to get to by train.

From Lörrach through the Wiesen valley to the Dinkelberg with its mysterious karst caves and wide views down to the Rhine. Up to the Table Jura with its cherry trees and through the busy Ergolz valley to Liestal.

From baroque Solothurn along the meandering Aare to Dreiseenland (three lakes country). Just 130 years ago, this landscape was redesigned by man: the lake level lowered and marshes drained. Seeland is now the scene of intense vegetable cultivation.

The Rhine Route follows the Alpine river from mountain source to the large Rhine port at Basel. A vastly varied trip through diverse landscapes hewn by the mighty river over the ages.

In the high valley: the clear, quiet charm of Lac de Joux, high up hundreds of anthills and rows of small, skilfully-laid stone walls in the serene Parc jurassien vaudois . An easy freewheel down to the cheerful atmosphere of Lac Léman.

The rolling hills of the Gantrisch Nature Park. Between Guggershörnli and Sensegraben past the much-sung-about Guggisberg. The River Sense is crossed at Guggerbach. The route then continues into Friburgerland via Zumholz to Plaffeien.

An energetic up and down on a steep sun-kissed southern slope, through well-tended vineyards, small wine villages and historic spots such as Saillon with the mini-vineyard of forger Farinet and Chamoson, with the octagonal tower of St-Pierre-de-Clages.

From Lac Léman uphill through the granary of Waadtland to Yverdon, then along Lac de Neuchâtel, past Grandson Castle up into Val de Ruz and on over the Vue des Alpes to La Chaux-de-Fonds with its world-famous watch museum.

Over the Ärgera/La Gérine, the «Röstigraben», the divide between German & French-speaking Switzerland, the silhouette of the city of Fribourg in the distance, down to the Rossens dam, which in 1948 transformed a jagged ravine into lovely Lac de la Gruyère.

Kandersteg is surrounded by glaciers and rugged rock faces. Kandertal valley is dotted with individual farmhouses; compact villages have only existed here for 150 years. You accompany the rushing Kander, the imposing Niesen appears, the valley becomes wider.

With the bustle of Basel still in your ears, climb the first Jura heights, find your stride along the richly wooded waters of La Lucelle, the Swiss-French border, and dive into the gently rolling Ajoie countryside.

From the Kandertal, the route winds past the picture-book Niesen peak into the flat Aaretal. Enjoy a cultural intermezzo in Bern’s Paul-Klee Museum. Conquer the Jura chain through rocky gorges, sights set on the Swiss-French border at Boncourt.

After the wide Bodensee you soon cross the monastery town of St. Gallen. After Herisau you tackle the hilly outcrop of the Säntis, reach Toggenburg and pedal through a tradition-rich orchard landscape, a delight for both palate and soul.

Over the Lindenberg into Freiamt, sweeping alongside the train to Zug, where towering office blocks contrast with the pleasant old town, winding north with the Sihl, through the lonely Sihlwald forest, an area of wilderness at the gates of the city.

From Zernez the route leads through the unique National Park to Tschierv. You then reach Val Müstair with its world-famous St. Johann Monastery in Müstair. Finally you cross the border into Vinschgau and travel on through the pretty little towns to Mals.

A trip through flat fields and over a challenging pass, through rare moorlands with an unbelievable wealth of flora, through the densely populated Mittelland, past lonely farms and through the legend-laden Lucerne hinterland.

Through romantic old towns and vineyards, passing lakeside bathing beaches at the foot of the Jura. The Grandson fortress, Roman mosaics at Orbe, Romanesque monastery at Romainmôtier on the path to the cultural diversity of Genève.

The Emmental is a region in Canton Bern, home to the famous eponymous cheese with the large holes. Life is a tranquil affair among these hills, which give every appearance of belonging to a different era. By way of discovering them, this short loop chooses roads with little traffic.

The route delivers on its name (Wasseramt means «water district»): along the way, you'll encounter water in a variety of forms. Following the Aare, the flat tour leads to the innovative Zuchwil hybrid power station, past the water tower with its views, and back into the time of the stilt-house dwellers.

From the tourist attractions at Stein am Rhein to Zurich wine country, where asparagus and hops grow alongside vines and wheat. The Ittigen Charterhouse, a former Augustine Monastery is an invitation to stop. On through fields and orchards from Frauenfeld to Wil.
