Old New Year's Eve
Overview
Intro
The Silvesterchlausen is probably the most impressive winter custom in the Appenzellerland.
In the municipalities of Urnäsch, Waldstatt, Hundwil, Schwellbrunn and Schönengrund, the "Wüeschte", the "Schöwüeschte" and the "Schöne" are already circulating early in the morning.
In Appenzellerland, the turn of the year is celebrated twice. According to the Gregorian calendar on December 31 and according to the Julian calendar on January 13. The New Year's Eve lice are out and about on these dates. A distinction is made between "beautiful Chläus", "wüeschti Chläus" and "schöwüeschti Chläus". The beautiful ones wear elaborately decorated headdresses with scenes from rural life, which are lovingly handcrafted in hundreds of hours of leisure time. The deserts and nature lice captivate with elaborate, wildly decorated hats, hoods and masks. The Silvesterchläuse are out and about from early morning, going from house to house and wishing everyone "es guets Neus" with devout singing and lively "Zäuerli". In the evening, they are out and about in the pubs until midnight. If you want to join them in the evening, you should book a table early in one of the inns.
By the way: if December 31st or January 13th falls on a Sunday, the festivities take place on the preceding Saturday.
