Rising Ape
Overview
Intro
Juggling the breakneck pace of an ever-accelerating world
Pump, produce, optimize, accelerate. Then start over. Again. And again. Inspired in part by the absurd world of the Shadocks—those creatures who spent their time pumping without really knowing why—Rising Ape takes a humorous look at one of the great obsessions of our time: productivity. On stage, Idriss Roca juggles, runs, manipulates, and adapts to increasingly demanding mechanisms. Everything is built right before the audience’s eyes, in a series of ingenious contraptions where speed becomes a performance in its own right. As the pace picks up, the show reveals what goes on behind the scenes: the pressure, the exhaustion, the constant demand to do more, faster, better.Drawing also from the world of speedrunning—the video game practice of finishing a game in record time—Rising Ape transforms the stage into an absurd competitive arena. Part virtuoso circus, part social satire, and part frantic race against time, the show makes us laugh while posing a profoundly timely question: How far are we willing to go to maintain our performance?
