An exhibition celebrating the Morat linden tree

For the past few weeks, a young linden tree steeped in history has been taking root in the Bourg neighborhood, at the intersection of Route and Rue des Alpes. Derived from the last authenticated offshoot of the Murten linden tree—an iconic tree linked by legend to the Confederates’ victory in 1476— it was donated to the City of Fribourg by the University Botanical Garden to mark the 550th anniversary of the famous battle. To highlight this exceptional heritage, the City and the Botanical Garden are now offering the public a free, open-air exhibition that traces the tree’s fascinating history through the centuries. From its legendary status to its botanical preservation, this exhibition highlights a living legacy at the intersection of collective memory and scientific knowledge. Set up on the new green space surrounding the linden tree, the exhibition invites visitors to take a stroll that is both cultural and contemplative. A commemorative plaque has also been installed in front of the young tree to permanently mark the importance of this symbol of Fribourg’s history. On view until early October, this exhibition offers everyone the opportunity to (re)discover a unique testament to the past, now firmly rooted in the present as well.
