Wolfgang Hildesheimer

Themed Tour
According to Wolfgang Hildesheimer (1916–1991), a German author and artist who found his adopted home in Poschiavo, “the unexpected” is the true defining feature of Valposchiavo.
Here he encountered not only nature but also the villages with their architectural peculiarities, especially in Poschiavo, the main town, whose uniqueness defies all expectations.
In the fall of 1956, Hildesheimer—who could hardly stand the “terrible Bavarian climate”—discovered Poschiavo for himself: “Poschiavo! It has the right altitude, the right climate, the right people.” He settled there with his wife Silvia, a painter.
On July 31, 2026, visitors will be able to learn more about the lives of Wolfgang Hildesheimer and his wife thanks to a program that starts at the Atelier, along the Poschiavino River, to the Old Monastery to admire the famous collages, and on to Palazzo de Bassus Mengotti, where Gian Caspar Bott has curated a collection of the German intellectual’s personal items. Several speakers will recount Hildesheimer’s life, including Monica Thurner, Silvia Hildesheimer’s granddaughter, Giada Tuena, and Gian Caspar Bott.
