Lithography through a woman’s eyes
Overview
Intro
A gathering to explore craftsmanship and how it is passed on
Who are the women keeping the art of lithography alive today? How does one learn this craft, how are its techniques passed on, and what role do women play in it?
With the support of the Jan Michalski Foundation, the director and photographer Dorothée Thébert has written a piece based on an interview she conducted with a female printer. The event will continue with a reading and a tour of the exhibition, featuring a selection of around ten works by female artists. This is an opportunity not only to discover their creations, but also to reflect on the role of women in the history and practice of lithography. For behind every print lie techniques, experiences and knowledge that are passed down.
This morning’s event will provide an opportunity to explore these and to reflect together on how to preserve them and keep them alive. Dorothée Thébert When Dorothée Thébert was approached by the Forel Museum to write a text based on the exhibition \*De pierre à image\*, the lithographers’ saying, ‘saxa loquuntur’ or ‘stones speak’, immediately struck her as a starting point for her writing.
In her text, she seeks to give a voice not only to the lithographic stone, but also to the image revealed by the technical process, to the limestone itself, and finally to the lithographer – a woman printer who never ceases to marvel at this process that brings the image to life through the imprint, an age-old gesture.
