At the Natural History Museum of Geneva, you’ll encounter the world’s only known preserved skin of an extinct emu species, Ice Age megafauna and the history of our planet.

The Natural History Museum of Geneva is Switzerland’s largest natural history museum. Its collection comprises almost 15 million objects, ranging from animal specimens and fossils to minerals. The museum has been closed since 2024 for extensive renovation and refurbishment work. It is scheduled to reopen in 2028.

See the world’s only known preserved emu skin
French explorer Nicolas Baudin brought the bird alive from Australia to Paris around 1803. After the animal died, its bones remained in Paris, while its skin made its way to Geneva. The population the bird belonged to became extinct around 1830. Here, you are looking at the world’s only known surviving specimen of this extinct emu species.

Discover Ice Age animals and megafauna
Mammoths and woolly rhinoceroses take you back to the last Ice Age. Their skeletons and specimens reveal which animals once roamed the landscapes around the glaciers of the Ice Age. Among imposing bones and fossil remains, the world of thousands of years ago comes vividly to life.
