"Lake Geneva Seen from Chexbres" is one of 13 versions of the view across Lake Geneva from the village of Chexbres painted by Ferdinand Hodler between 1895 and 1911. In the Basel canvas, we look out from a meadow high above the lake across the reflective surface of the water, which stretches as far as the Savoy Alps in the hazy distance, with an immense sky above. In nature, Hodler recognised physical laws that he sought to visualize in his figure paintings and landscapes.
