The Museum of the Swiss Charters of Confederation exhibits the most important documents from the history of the Old Swiss Confederation and explains their meaning. The focal point is the legendary Federal Charter of 1291.
The Swiss Charter of 1291 has long been considered the founding document of Switzerland. It is today as famous as the stories of the Rütli Oath, the freedom battles, the Burgenbruch (destruction of the castles), and of William Tell and the expulsion of the Habsburg Bailiffs.
Some of the stories are myths and legends. But when and why did these stories arise? What really happed in Central Switzerland around 1300? In the Museum of the Swiss Charters of Confederation one can immerse oneself in the fascinating world of Swiss history and learn important facts on the founding and development of the Swiss Confederation.
