Overview
Intro
Experience the Federal Charter of 1291 up close
The Museum of the Swiss Charter of Confederation is exhibiting the original document of the Federal Charter. As inconspicuous as it looks, it was momentous: On the audio guide tour, you will learn why Schwyz, Uri and Nidwalden joined forces and how a legal treaty became a Swiss national symbol.
- Good to know: The audio guide costs 3 francs and lasts 40 or 60 minutes.
Understanding flags and myths
Follow the flag collection of the Schwyz estate through the centuries. You can see how the red Schwyz banner grew into the white cross that now adorns the Swiss flag. And you will learn what is behind the founding myths: Did William Tell really shoot the apple off his son's head or is he an invention?
Travel to the Middle Ages with children (1 hour)
The audio guide for children brings Swiss history to life. There is a lot to discover: On a journey into the past, the Uri bull, the heraldic animal of the canton of Uri, explains what a seal is and Walterli Tell tells you about his famous father.
- Good to know: Children up to 16 years of age visit the museum free of charge.
- Tip: Before your visit, find out when family workshops will be offered.
