Intro
This former Benedictine monastery with its cloister, crypt and Switzerland's largest nave, is closely linked to the history of the Habsburg dynasty. The oldest burial place of the Habsburgs is in the unique Abbey church; later tombs are in the Loreto chapel, with the hearts of Emperor Karl and his consort Zita.
As the Habsburgers became aware that Radbot and Ita were founding a monastery for the Benedictine monks in 1027, they gave them the motto ”God shall be glorified in all things”: in music, in art and in literature. A Good thousand years later, this spirit is still felt in Muri. The premises form an attractive and well-known cultural center where various arts are worshiped in a splendid setting.
Free access to the Abbey church of St. Martin with its five organs, monastery gardens and fountains. The new museum, the iGuide and the detailed Muri app make for an extremely instructive visit.
The Caspar Wolf collection
Caspar Wolf was the most important landscape and Alpine painter in Switzerland. His collection of oil paintings, gouaches, drawings and engravings are on display in Muri Abbey.
Wolf was one of the first artists to paint the Alps the way he saw them with his own eyes, around 250 years ago. This is because he loved observing glaciers, mountains, waterfalls and other spectacles of nature, and captured them in his pictures.
