Intro
Muri Abbey Church is one of the most important Baroque buildings in Switzerland.
Muri Abbey Church is one of the most important baroque buildings in Switzerland. Its almost thousand-year-old connection with the House of Habsburg, which donated the former Benedictine monastery in 1027, is unique. Over 200 baroque frescoes adorn the octagonal canopy. Five historical instruments together form a unique organ system of world renown, which is played in a series of concerts from spring to fall. In the cloister, donor panels, which are regarded as the pinnacle of Renaissance glass painting in Switzerland, tell of the many relationships that Muri Abbey maintained with exponents of political and ecclesiastical life from all over Europe. In the Loreto Chapel, the Habsburg founders and the early members of the Habsburg dynasty have found their final resting place, as have the hearts of the last Austrian imperial couple, Charles I and Zita. Tickets for the cloister are available at the Muri Visitor Center.
