This is Locarno
Locarno is located in the south of Switzerland in the
Ticino region. On the shores of
Lake Maggiore, the sun-drenched city has a mild climate and is a popular destination and holiday resort.
Discover Locarno
Locarno is an ideal place for sightseeing, as everything is within easy walking distance. First, get to know the picturesque old town with many shops and cafés. The
Piazza Grande is a worthwhile stop, then make a detour to the
pilgrimage church of Madonna del Sasso. It is located above Locarno and offers a fantastic view of the city, lake and mountains. Alternatively, you can have a good time on Lake Maggiore.
Piazza Grande
Covering an area of 12,000 square metres, the Piazza Grande is one of the largest squares in Switzerland. The Piazza Grande is best known for the Moon & Stars music festival in July and the
Locarno Film Festival in August. Also recommended: Enjoy the atmosphere of the square with an espresso. Make sure to drop by on Thursday, which is market day.
Lake Maggiore
Lake Maggiore is a true natural paradise, nestled between the Alps and the Mediterranean. What makes this lake so special? Palm trees, crystal blue water embraced by mountains and that Mediterranean attitude to life that you feel in the south of Switzerland. Whether you walk along the lake shore, take the plunge in
Lido Locarno, Lido Ascona or one of the freely accessible bathing areas, or take a boat trip heading for
Ascona or
Brissago, Lake Maggiore is sure to inspire you.
Around Locarno
Just a few steps from the train station, you can take the cable car to
Cardada and continue to Cimetta. From here you have a wonderful 360 degree view. Treat yourself to a trip to the
Maggia Valley or the
Verzasca Valley with the world-famous
Ponte dei Salti bridge in Lavertezzo. Equally recommended is the fantastic
panoramic route by train to
the Centovalli. An alternative excursion: the
Brissago Islands, often referred to as the Botanical Garden of Ticino.
