Intro
On the seventh stage, a small cable car and stone steps lead from Altdorf into Central Switzerland, with much green, a little snow, and the Surenen Pass awaiting hikers along the way, as well as goats, cows and horses, before finally arriving in Engelberg.
Description
Before embarking on the seventh stage, a stop-off in the Volg near Attinghausen is recommended, which begins serving from 6 a.m. With your batteries fully charged for the day, onwards and upwards to Brüsti, with an ascent of around two hours through dense forest. There is a way round such hard work first thing in the morning – take the cable car up.
To reach the Surenen Pass, walk along a narrow ridge to cross the Chräienhöreli rock formation with its stone steps and the occasional snow field.
From the pass, the trail leads to a small refuge, which offers shelter if the weather suddenly and unexpectedly changes, and then it is another hour to the Blackenalp. This is a great place to stop for a drink and bite to eat (as well as toilet facilities being available). After hiking around two hours, you will begin to see the first signs of civilisation: Engelberg.
Before reaching the Alpine town, anyone not too tired should pay a visit to the Spannorthütte SAC. Your efforts will be rewarded with breathtaking views and a cosy hut atmosphere.
Warning, this is a long stage: Note that it is possible to shorten the hike by taking public transport and by staying overnight on the Blackenalp.
