Intro

Anyone who returns hungry to an SAC hut after a mountain hike quickly notices: food rarely tastes as good as it does high up on the mountain. Despite remote locations and simple facilities, many hut wardens wow their guests with creative cuisine. Local specialities, lovingly prepared with Victorinox knives, are also what make the following three huts so special: the Lidernenhütte in the Canton of Uri, the Capanna Corno Gries in Ticino and the Wildstrubelhütte in the Bernese Oberland.

Gentle mountain landscape. The Lidernenhütte is nestled amid a lush Alpine meadow.

The hut wardens

The hut warden couple embarked on their adventure on the Lidernenalp – without a business plan, but brimming with energy and new ideas. While Irène treats guests to sumptuous meals, Pius takes care of “everything to do with wood or rock”. They are fully supported by seasonal personnel.

The hut warden

Monica Stoppani originally hails from Grindelwald, but has lived in Ticino for the last 35 years. The passionate cook welcomes guests in her own language. Together with her team, she hosts hikers, mountaineers and mountain bikers at the hut.

  • It takes 1 hour to reach the hut starting from Alp di Cruina (postal bus stop Nufenenpasstrasse).

The photographer

The three SAC huts were captured in the best possible light by Patrick Güller. The 23-year-old from Valais is a passionate landscape photographer who lives out his passion for the Swiss mountains both on foot and on skis. Always in tow: his camera.
