Intro

This four-thousander gets its name from Joseph Zumstein, who was the first person to climb it. The Zumsteinspitze lies in the middle of the Monte Rosa massif, between Dufourspitze and Signalkuppe.

The Zumsteinspitze (4,563m a.s.l.) is in the Valais Alps and the third-highest elevation in the Monte Rosa massif. It lies between the Dufourspitze and the Signalkuppe, and has an imposing glacier on the border with Italy (the Grenz Glacier) at its base on the western side. Joseph Vincent and his rope party were the first to reach the peak in 1820. It gets its name from Joseph Zumstein, one of the people in the first group to climb it. The simplest route takes climbers over the southeast ridge.
