Life at the Palace Through the Centuries: From Summer Residence to Family Home
Panoramica
Introduzione
Guided tour of Waldegg Castle followed by a talk by Felix von Sury, a descendant of the founding family and the castle’s current resident
Waldegg Castle was built in the late 17th century as a summer residence for the von Besenval family, a patrician family from Solothurn. With its magnificent gardens, Waldegg provided the von Besenvals with a setting befitting their social status for their summer stay just outside the city gates. The castle was being used only sporadically when the von Sury family acquired it in 1865; they renovated it and lived there year-round from then on. The 1963 deed of donation and purchase, by which the castle was transferred to the Canton of Solothurn as a foundation, includes a right of residence, subject to payment, for the descendants of the von Sury family in the east wing of the castle. This historic monument of national significance, which has been open to the public since 1991, is thus still inhabited today by the descendants of the former owner families. The current resident of the castle, Felix von Sury, will offer fascinating insights into his ancestors’ castle.
