Overview
Intro
Die Ausstellung ist erster Meilenstein in der Neugestaltung der Ethnologie des Kulturmuseums.
Die Hauptausstellung 2025 taucht ein in die Entstehungsgeschichte der ethnologischen Sammlung und erzählt vom globalen Netzwerk der Stadt St. Gallen. Im Zentrum steht die 1878 gegründete Ostschweizerische Geographisch-Commercielle Gesellschaft. Eng verwoben mit der Textilindustrie, suchte die Gesellschaft nach neuen Absatzmärkten in Übersee und verband ihre wirtschaftlichen Interessen mit einer umfassenden wissenschafts- und gesellschaftsorientierten Sammlungstätigkeit. Sie trug zur Gründung des 1921 eröffneten Kulturmuseums bei. Die Ausstellung ist erster Meilenstein in der Neugestaltung der Ethnologie des Kulturmuseums.
