Get involved! From a grain of sand to a sustainable city
Overview
Intro
This exhibition at UNIGE invites visitors to follow the life of a grain of sand. Behind this seemingly ordinary resource lie realities that are often overlooked.
This exhibition invites you to follow the life of a grain of sand. Shaped over thousands of years, it travels along rivers, across seas, and along roads all over the world. From raw material, it becomes a resource, used on a massive scale in concrete—a material found everywhere in our buildings, roads, and infrastructure. But behind this seemingly ordinary resource lie realities that are often overlooked: intensive extraction, degraded landscapes, weakened ecosystems, and deep social and environmental inequalities.
From quarries to cities shaped by real estate speculation, via global supply chains, following a grain of sand means questioning the ways we build, live, and transform our landscapes. It means considering other, more sustainable materials (such as wood, earth, and stone), other construction practices (such as reuse), and numerous initiatives that are more respectful of our environments and living things.
