Wir sind ständig in Bewegung. Wie wir unterwegs sind, prägt unseren Alltag und beeinflusst die Gestaltung des öffentlichen Raums. Dabei werden wir immer schneller und legen zunehmend grössere Distanzen zurück. Technologische Entwicklungen und die Verfügbarkeit von Energie verändern unsere Art der Fortbewegung grundlegend.
Seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert erlebt die Welt eine beispiellose Beschleunigung. Das Fahrrad verschafft breiten Bevölkerungsschichten erstmals ein bislang unbekanntes Mass an Geschwindigkeit und Unabhängigkeit. Der Wunsch nach individueller Bewegungsfreiheit treibt im 20. Jahrhundert auch den Siegeszug des Automobils an. Erdöl als Rohstoff und Energieträger ebnet den Weg für eine Mobilitätsrevolution.
Die Geschichte des Verkehrs ist jedoch auch eine Geschichte von Krisen, Widerstand und der Suche nach Alternativen. Biel liefert dafür eindrückliche Beispiele. Mal mit dem Velo, mal mit dem Spirit of Biel, mal mit dem Smart, mal auf der Bremse – von der Fahrradhochburg über General Motors bis zum Widerstand gegen den Westast hat die Stadt so manche Kurve genommen.
