Traces of a Tradition
Overview
Intro
Mozart – Clara Schumann – Brahms
During the 2026 concert season, the Steiner Trio will perform three works spanning nearly a century of piano trio history: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Trio in G major, K. 564, from 1788, Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio in G-sharp minor, Op. 17, from 1846, and Johannes Brahms’ Piano Trio No. 3 in C minor, Op. 101, from 1886.
These three works illustrate different developments within the genre: Mozart’s clear formal language, Clara Schumann’s romantic and contrapuntal musical language, and Brahms’s focused and expressive musical language.
There is a special connection between Clara Schumann and Brahms. Her piano trio was composed four decades before Brahms’ Op. 101 and belongs to the Romantic chamber music tradition that had a lasting influence on Brahms. A direct comparison reveals how this tradition evolved over the generations.
