Carouge at a glance
The Carouge district is now part of Geneva, but was planned as an independent city by the Kingdom of Sardinia in the 18th century. The Arve River separates Carouge from Geneva city centre. The two-storey facades, the green courtyards and the checkerboard-like streets are part of Switzerland's national cultural heritage.

Place du Marché and Rue Saint-Joseph
The Place du Marché is the heart of Carouge. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, a weekly market with over 300 years of tradition takes place here. The adjacent Rue Saint-Joseph runs through the core of the quarter, lined with boutiques, jewellery studios and art galleries.
- Good to know: From March to November, an additional evening market is held on Thursdays.
- Tip: The inner courtyards of the houses are green and partly open to the public.
Nightlife in Carouge
Carouge is considered the liveliest nightlife district in Geneva. Around the Place du Marché and Rue Vautier you will find bars, restaurants and jazz clubs – for an aperitif, dinner or a long evening. The neighborhood is also popular with locals.
- Good to know: In the evenings, restaurants are well frequented – reservations are recommended.
- Tip: Le Chat Noir at 13 rue Vautier is Geneva's best-known jazz and blues venue.
Walking and cycling on the banks of the Arve
A continuous footpath and cycle path runs along the Arve. You can walk or cycle along the river – directly from Carouge and away from the busy neighbourhood streets.
