На горе Эбенальп обнаружены следы неандертальцев: ученые доказали, что доисторические люди действительно жили в трех знаменитых пещерах Вильдкирхли. Сегодня здесь расположены памятник и горный ресторан. Добраться сюда можно на канатной дороге.
Неандертальцам когда-то приходилось карабкаться на гору пешком. Сегодня подняться на Эбенальп можно по подвесной канатной дороге, которая провезет вас мимо скал и трех пещер, когда-то обитаемых. Горная станция на самом высоком плато Эбенальпа – отправная точка многочисленных хайкинговых маршрутов по региону Аппенцелль-Альпштайн.
Под Эбенальпом лежит Медвежья пещера, через которую можно попасть в знаменитые Вильдкирхли, где сегодня находится горный ресторан. В Медвежьей пещере были обнаружены следы медведей Ледникового периода, датирующиеся 50 000 годом до н.э. Некоторые из сделанных здесь находок можно увидеть в “Домике отшельника” в Вильдкирхли и музее Аппенцелля.

Cable car ride (6 minutes)
Get into the cabin and float over forests and alpine meadows up to Ebenalp. During the journey, the view opens up to the Appenzellerland, the Rhine Valley and, on a clear day, as far as Lake Constance. Once at the top, you stand on the viewing terrace in the middle of the Alpstein peaks with Säntis and Hoher Kasten.
- Good to know: Revision work will take place in April and November/December.
- Tip: For a comfortable journey, take the Appenzell Railway directly to Wasserauen.
Hike to the Wildkirchli Caves and the Äscher (45–60 minutes)
From the mountain station, follow the well-developed path down to the Wildkirchli Caves. In the caves, archaeologists found traces of Neanderthals and cave bears. From there you can reach the Äscher mountain inn in 15 minutes, which is built directly on the rock face. The terrace offers views of the Alpstein Mountain.
- Good to know: The Wildkirchli Caves and the Äscher Restaurant are closed in winter.
- Tip: In the small museum at the Wildkirchli, finds from the Stone Age are exhibited.
Hike to Seealpsee and Wasserauen (2–2.5 hours)
From the Äscher, a steep mountain path leads down to the Seealpsee at 1143 metres. The turquoise mountain lake is nestled between steep rock faces and the Säntis. On the shore, you can picnic, swim or rent a rowing boat. From here, a path leads back to Wasserauen in about an hour.
- Good to know: Surefootedness and sturdy shoes are required.
- Tip: At the Seealpsee there are two mountain inns with catering facilities.
