The Museum of La Gruyère in Bulle traces the role this region (famous of course for its cheese) and its inhabitants have played in history and in the development of Switzerland. The name Gruyere conjures up images of mountains, chalets, herdsmen and cheese – the postcard view of Switzerland. The image is partly true, but the permanent exhibition reveals the fascinating history of the urban versus rural contexts, a topical issue for both Bulle and Switzerland. The visitor route, floor lit to make it optional, provides surprises at every corner. History unfolds like a well-written story and echoes each visitor’s personnal experience and knowledge.
