The old town of Montreux is located on a hill above Lake Geneva – about a 15-minute walk from the lakeshore. Cobbled streets and historic winegrowers' houses characterise the Les Planches district. The 15th-century church of Saint-Vincent overlooks the district and offers a wide view of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Walk through the Les Planches district
Walk through the cobbled streets of the old town, past old winegrowers' houses. In the Les Planches district, you will find small cafés and bistros to linger in. The covered Marché couvert is the lively centre of the quarter. From April to October, a weekly market with fresh products from the region attracts visitors on Friday mornings.
- Good to know: The old town can be reached from Montreux train station in about 15 minutes on foot.
- Tip: Put on comfortable shoes – the alleys are paved and partly steep.
View from the Saint-Vincent church
Climb up to the 15th-century Gothic church of Saint-Vincent. From the church entrance, you have a magnificent view of Lake Geneva, the Valais Alps and, on a clear day, as far as the Dents du Midi. Right next to it is the historic ossuary, a rare testimony to medieval burial culture.
- Good to know: The church is freely accessible.
Chauderon Gorge Hike (1.5-2 hours)
The path to the Chauderon gorge begins directly at the Les Planches district. The path follows the Baye de Montreux river through narrow rocky passages uphill to Glion or Les Avants. The trail is considered a mountain hiking trail and requires sturdy shoes and surefootedness.
- Good to know: Check current trail status before visiting; may be temporarily blocked.
- Tip: From Glion or Les Avants, take the train back to Montreux (round trip).
