Not every toboggan run offers this much variety. Take a thrilling downhill ride from Grotzenbüel to the Hüttenberg near Braunwald, over pistes and roads and through woodlands – with a panoramic view of Glarus Alps along the way.

Sledgers are carried up to Glarus’s car-free sun terrace by the Braunwaldbahn, a modern funicular railway that overcomes gradients of up to 64 per cent to cover the route in just seven minutes.

From there, the start of the ride is just a convenient gondola journey away – from Niederschlacht via the Hüttenberg to Grotzenbüel. The toboggan run begins here, at first following the ski slope on a steep descent for about three kilometres. It then winds its way through a twisting section, followed by leisurely passages through the snowy forest. The route runs past pretty chalets and farms via Grosssiten and back to the Hüttenberg station, where sledgers can take the gondola back to the starting point.

A constant feature of this family-friendly toboggan run is the Glarus Alpine panorama including the Tödi and Ortsstock. Those who want to admire the scenery in peace along the way will find the ideal place at the Chämistube mountain restaurant, where Glarus specialities can be enjoyed by an open fire.
