Intro
The via ferrata leads high above the Lauterbrunnen valley from Mürren to Gimmelwald. Ice pegs, ladders and stairs lead along the steep rock face – with magnificent views down into the valley and guaranteed thrills.
Difficulty
K3, intermediate. The climb requires experience in alpine terrain, a head for heights and complete via ferrata equipment (climbing harness, helmet, via ferrata set). Only suitable for experienced mountaineers.Valley location/starting point
Mürren (1638 m), car-free mountain village high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Accessible with the Schilthorn cable car from Stechelberg or with the Lauterbrunnen–Mürren mountain railway (BLM).Approach
The entrance is behind the sports chalet, below the post office building in Mürren. A large poster marks the beginning of the via ferrata. Via ferrata equipment can be rented on site at sports shops (approx. 5 minutes from the train station).Via ferrata
The 2.2 km long trail leads along the vertical rock face 300 metres down to Gimmelwald. The steep passages are secured with ice pegs, ladders and stairs. A highlight is the traverse of the gorge with a tyrolienne (only accessible with a mountain guide, otherwise bypass via rope bridge). At the end, the spectacular Nepal Bridge over the gorge awaits – airy and with an unobstructed view into the depths.Exit
After the Nepal Bridge, the path leads through alpine meadows directly to the Gimmelwald station of the Schilthorn cable car (approx. 5 minutes).Good to know
The via ferrata is accessible from the beginning of June to the end of October. Equipment is mandatory: Helmet, via ferrata set and climbing harness – rental possible on site. The Tyrolienne is only allowed with a mountain guide, otherwise bypass via rope bridge.
