Cinema Paradiso
Overview
Intro
Special event exclusively for members of the Schaffhausen Retirees' Association.
This classic film depicts, almost entirely through flashbacks, the childhood of film director Salvatore (Toto) Di Vita in the fictional Sicilian fishing village of Giancaldo. The narrative begins with a scene set in Rome in the 1980s. Salvatore, an internationally successful director, returns home and learns from his much younger girlfriend that his mother had called from Sicily to break the news of the death of Alfredo, the old movie projectionist. On the one hand, the film uses this event to bring the now-adult Salvatore back to the place of his childhood so that he can attend the funeral. On the other hand, the death serves as the catalyst for an imaginary journey into the memories of the time when Salvatore was still a child (Toto).
Director: Giuseppe Tornatore (Italy/1989), Original Version with German subtitles, ages 12 and up, 122 min.
