It’s something of a rarity: on hot summer days, a visit to the Museum Tinguely usually ends with a dip in the Rhine. After all, those who want to swim in one of Basel’s most popular stretches of the river will find an ideal place to start here: the “Solitude” beach just outside the museum. For visitors who prefer to stay on dry land, the water sprayed by Jean Tinguely’s “Schwimmwasserplastik” in front of the museum offers a gentler way to cool off.

The museum park at the Fondation Beyeler, Riehen/Basel

Unquestionably, the park adorned with art at the Fondation Beyeler is worth a visit by itself. But the grounds are also frequently used for all kinds of events and reveal quite different facets on each occasion. At the annual Summer Party and on the Family Days at the Fondation Beyeler, a varied programme of workshops, museum games, cookery and much more provides excitement and entertainment. The “sun.set” summer event series, meanwhile, transforms the Berower Park into an outdoor electronic music venue and brings the art and music scene together.

The Napoleon Museum, Arenenberg castle

The last emperor of France lived high above Lake Constance, in the middle of a large park, in a tastefully furnished castle. Today's Napoleon Museum contains the original furnishings. The park has recently been restored. The castle Arenenberg was owned by patrician families, until it was sold to Hortense de Beauharnais, the adopted daughter and sister-in-law of Napoleon I. She commissioned the modification of the castle in the style of the French Empire and lived there from 1817 onwards with her son Louis Napoleon, who later became Emperor Napoleon III. The interior and its furnishings are nearly completely preserved and all rooms of the castle can be freely accessed. In addition, she had French garden architects design the 13-hectare park.

Oskar Reinhart Collection “Am Römerholz”, Winterthur

A jewel of the Swiss museum scene is located in an elevated position above Winterthur: one of the most distinguished private collections of the 20th century awaits you in a villa hidden away behind old trees in an idyllic garden. Already in his lifetime the Winterthur art collector Oskar Reinhart turned his residential house "Am Römerholz" into a museum. He had an imposing picture gallery added on. After his death in 1965 his beneficiary, the Swiss Confederation, opened the doors to Reinhart's treasures. The villa and historic park with its sculptures combined with the collection constitute a small but impressive complete work of art.
