Herens cattle educational trail
Overview
Intro
The Herens cattle educational trail, with a total of six stations, starts at Alpe de Tortin in the middle of the 4 Vallées and brings you closer to the life of the (in)famous Herens cows in a playful and authentic way.
The Herens cattle educational trail gives exciting insights into the life of the Herens cattle, and also the people who live and work in the Nendaz region. The trail starts at Alpe de Tortin, which can be reached by chair lift from Siviez. During the chair lift ride, you can enjoy wonderful views of the lovely, multifaceted landscape you are about to walk through. The hike is four kilometres long, lasts an hour and a quarter – depending on how long you spend at the six stations and whether you stop off again en route. The total ascent is 35 metres. An interesting aside: Siviez, below, has many restaurants including the friendly “Chez Caroline” and “Chotte de Tortin” on Alpe de Tortin.
Herens cows are small but sturdy, and have beautiful black colouring with a red tinge. They are as much part of Valais as the St. Bernard dog and the Matterhorn. Herens cattle are robust and are well accustomed to grazing on steep sloping meadows. This is also how they found their way to Valais. If you’ve already hiked in Valais, you are sure to have seen Herens cattle. There are around 800 Herens cows on the Nendaz Alps – so they are unmissable.
