The fortifications of the town of Fribourg were built as protection for the town in the Middle Ages between the 13th and 15th centuries. With large sections of them having been preserved to this day, they are the most significant piece of medieval military architecture in Switzerland. They are also open to the public.

The “d’Grandfey”, a proud 12-seater boat powered by electric solar energy, offers a pleasure trip service between Schiffenen and the city of Fribourg (Neigles) and back.

The “Funi” (funicular railway), which overhang the Old Town and the river Sarine, is a “technical engineering marvel”, listed as a cultural asset of national importance. This nostalgic railway has been running since 1899 – with no exhaust fumes.

Deep in the forest in the heart of the Charmey ski region is a winter park with plenty of varied activities for young and old alike. Bounè Rodzo is the name of this winter oasis, which is open free of charge to sledding, skiing and snowshoe fans. A unique, fun experience to enjoy with family or friends!

The Espace Jean Tinguely - Niki de Saint Phalle is a stroke of luck: In the high-ceilinged rooms of the disused tram depot in the heart of town, the rattling work of art by Fribourg-born Jean Tinguely is a great sight to see. Similarly, the lush "Nanas" (female sculptures) by his wife Niki de Saint Phalle delight the eye too.

The latest attraction in the city of Fribourg – Espace 1606 – takes us on a journey back to the year 1606, and shows us what the bilingual city looked like then based on a model made from an original etching by copper engraver Martin Martini.

The gentle lapping of the waves, the first warming rays of the sun and the sound of the birds’ dawn chorus: canoeing is the ideal way to discover the Grande Cariçaie nature reserve on Lake Neuchâtel during the summer months.

The abbey church of Payerne, which was founded in the 11th century by Cluniac monks, is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture and building technology of the period. The abbey church, the 14th century parish church facing it, and the adjacent buildings together form a noteworthy unity.

In this green oasis in the centre of Fribourg, the Jean Tinguely fountain is particularly striking. It was created by the contemporary Fribourg artist in memory of his friend and racing driver Jo Siffert.

Walk along an educational bird trail featuring huge attractions (giant nest box, platform in the trees). Visit to a peat bog. Furrowing the forest, a woodchip path invites visitors to discover a variety of bird species and their habitat (man-sized attractions).

For those in search of adventure we recommend a ride up to the Riggisalp on the ski lift, followed by a speedy descent on one of the special scooters available. Thrills guaranteed!

The caves were excavated in the sandstone between 1916 and 1917 to defend the Swiss plateau during the First World War. A 200 metre-long tunnel was created in the process.
