Intro

Little is known about the origins of the settlement on the southern bridgehead of the Rhine crossing at Rötteln (Rotwasserstelz) Castle. The first recorded mention of Keiserstuol dates back to 1227,

Kaiserstuhl w skrócie

with the name being derived from the Old High German word “Keisuresstuol” and literally meaning “emperor’s chair”. The town was subsequently founded in 1254.

A brief history The compactly built, listed town is laid out in the shape of a right-angled triangle. Its current landmark, the Upper Tower (often wrongly referred to as the Roman Tower), was built in the mid-13th century and marks the southern cornerstone of the town’s fortifications. It overlooks the town and is the only preserved part of its former fortifications.

The historical town centre today The town has retained its medieval architecture and offers an interesting tour to visitors.
