A circular tour from Bad Ragaz taking in the mystical secrets of the Tamina Gorge. At Altes Bad Pfäfers: visit to the thermal spring grotto with hot water. Return across an impressive natural bridge to Pfäfers village, along the Porta Romana and past the Wartenstein ruins. Rhine bank path back to Bad Ragaz railway station.
Description
From Bad Ragaz spa, hikers walk directly into the Tamina Gorge and reach Altes Bad Pfäfers after a good hour (Gorge Bus also available for outward and return trips).
Switzerland's earliest baroque spa building, where kings and princesses used to bathe, now houses a monastery and spa museum, and the Paracelsus memorial. A visit to the thermal spring grotto (entry: CHF 5.00) is very rewarding, with a 450-meter walk into the gorge to the grotto where hot spring water gushes from the rocks.
The ascent starts at Altes Bad Pfäfers, passing over a natural bridge and finally out of the gorge and back to Pfäfers. This idyllic village is dominated by the impressive baroque monastery church and the former Benedictine abbey. The circular route leads past the Wartenstein ruins, downwards along the "Porta Romana" (a former military and trading route) and finally along the Rhine bank back to Bad Ragaz.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
