“Der Zoo der Diaspora” is a participatory project developed as part of the open youth work program of toj—the association for open youth work in the City of Bern. The main participants are adolescents and young adults from Bern West. Through this project, we aim to collectively explore the complex interrelationships between migration history, work, identity, responsibility, family, and belonging.
Through the metaphor of a zoo, we aim to ironically highlight the processes of containment, display, and exoticization that migrant youth and their families in Bern West often face.
In a writing workshop as well as in studios for music, film, photography, and design, the young people reflect on their own experiences in the diaspora. We deepen this exploration through diverse inputs as well as educational and cultural trips.
The goal is to make different lived experiences visible, to give young people a voice, and to empower them to counteract discriminatory, divisive, and racist processes. In this way, the project fosters solidarity across cultural, linguistic, and religious boundaries.
Azad Süsem serves as the project’s educational and artistic director; for 20 years, as part of toj, he has been exploring and bringing to light the lived experiences of young people in Bern West. This work also gave rise to the idea for the ZOO DER DIASPORA. Lauritz Mori serves as a youth worker and Thomas Krause as a freelance dramaturgy and multimedia consultant.
Overall responsibility for the project lies with toj and the City of Bern.
