Joséphine de Beauharnais poślubiła Napoleona Bonaparte w 1804 r. i w tym samym roku została koronowana na cesarzową. W 1810 r., Joséphine podróżowała do Szwajcarii pod przybranym imieniem «Comtesse d’Arenberg», gdzie odwiedziła wyspę St. Peter. 35 towarzyszących jej osób zostało przyjętych w wielkim stylu. Otrzymali obfite śniadanie w Sali Rousseau i spędzili popołudnie na tańcach, śmiechu i jedzeniu. Tego dnia, wczesnym rankiem ogromna liczba ludzi ze wsi zebrała się w okolicy. Zostało naliczonych 210 łodzi i kilka tysięcy obserwatorów. Wielu z nich mogło myśleć, iż cesarzowa zapłaci za wszystko. Tylko w ten sposób, można było wyjaśnić tak wygórowany rachunek.
